Washington Sweet Onions
It was 1900 when a Frenchman named Peter Pieri made his
way from Europe to Washington to settle. He brought with
him some onion seeds from the Island of Corsica, off the
coast of Italy. The Italian Community first planted the
onion as a fall harvest salad onion, however it soon became
popular as a regular onion because of its impressive ability
to over winter. The Washington Sweet Onion grown today is
a close relative to the original seed stock.
Today, Washington State is still home to what the locals
call "the French Onion". This mild onion has been
a favorite in West Coast Markets for many years. It was
only in the 1980's when this sweet onion became recognized
nation-wide as the late summer treat that it is.
Give your Sweet Onion lover what he wants with the only
freshly harvested sweet onion available in June and August.
